Sally Spens

Works
Overview

Printmaker Sally Spens studied Fine Art and Textiles at London’s Goldsmiths College, and her beautiful hand printed fabric designs are included in the Victoria & Albert Museum’s prestigious 20th Century Design Collection. Her delicate hand printed etchings, inspired by the patterns and forms of nature, have a rhythmic quality and show a designer’s eye for line and composition.

Sally has been invited by the European Cultural Centre in Venice to exhibit her etchings during the Biennale in 2022 and her work was shown in the ‘Kimono to Catwalk’ Textile Designs Exhibition (with Bentley and Spens) at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 27th August - 25th October 2020

Biography

‘Drawing has always been central to my work, both as a textile designer and as a painter/printmaker. It is important to me that the images are handmade, and originate from my drawings and experience. In the ‘Etchings of Imagined Pots’, images drawn from memory and observation are combined with that of vessels, linking associations with both. Working with a Japanese company for seven years on designs for summer kimonos has also been a major influence, particularly in the compositional botanical works. I feel privileged to have had that contact with the culture of Japan and try to bring those crafted sensibilities to my work as a printmaker. The making of etchings, intaglio onto copper plate, allows for infinite variations of expression and the transformation of images.’
